Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos)

9/10

A hillarious parady of Shaun of the Dead that also remains it's own unique film. It's used a lot of old kinda styles which I think worked amazingly. It has my favorite zombie trope of dad learns to be a better person and set an example for his child. I think this is all around solid zombie comedy movie and would recommend it to anyone.

The movie is set in Cuba and it uses this pretty well. It talks about poverty and how the revolutionary beliefs fail and are laughed at by the impoverished. It also deals with how people capitalize during a tragedy. Despite the political commentary the movie is mostly about Juan and his relationship with his daughter. His daughter plans to live with her mother in the United States and this angers Juan who despite knowing the numerous flaws of Cuba still takes pride in that identity. The movie is about Juan's growth from a criminal into a loving father who cares about his community. The movie is a parody of Shaun of the Dead with the name and Juan and his friend, Lazaro, just being Cuban Shaun and Ed. It is a great movie on it's own; I watched Shaun and Juan of the Dead back to back and I would recommend them both to anyone who asked. The cast also includes Lazaro's son who falls in love with Juan's daughter, El Primo and his lover China. China is a strange character that I didn't understand if they were gay, a drag queen, or early 2010s trans character and I still don't really know which one it is. There were some parts I was confused about which might have been solved if I knew Spanish and wasn't just reading the subtitles. The movie does make references to Cuban culutre and politics but it was pretty self explanatory.
