Ursidae's New World

Andean Bear

The Andean Bear also known as the Andean Short Face bear is the last species from the Short Faced Bear family. The Short Faced bears were a group of bears during the Ice Age, but the changing habitat and competition from other bears is believed to cause the extinction of their cousins the Giant Short-Faced Bear and the Lesser Short-Faced Bear. Now they are the only remaining short faced bear and the only South American bear. They are native to the Andes Mountains their habitats go from Colombia to Bolivia. They have black fur but have a unique feature of lighter fur around their face and down their chest. This pattern is unique to each individual. They can be 4-6ft (1.2-2m) tall. Andean Bear's habitats are shrublands, jungles, and grasslands. While living in different habitats they prefer high altitude.

They are very hervivorous and their diet is over 95% plants. They eat plants often overlooked by others due to it's difficulty to digest. To deal with this they have adapted with the largest zygomatic mandibulars which they use to chew up any plant they see. Less is known about them compared to other bears due to their reclusive nature, but when around humans they seem to be very docile as long as you stay away from their cubs and only 1 death has occured from a Andean bear. They are threatend by human expansion, poaching, and animal traffickers. They are my favorite bear because of how unique they look and they are so cool with their habitats and adaptations. The images I have above the Andean Bear is a skeleton of a Giant Short Faced Bear.

As they are my favorite bear, I would put them at #1. Their adaptations are pretty cool and they look so cute.
